Nirvana's first concert in France Bloody & Heavy / Nirvana / Tad Last update : December 2004
Actual setlist : - Intro/screaming- - School - Scoff - Love Buzz - Floyd The Barber - Dive> Johnny B. Goode (jam) - Polly - Big Cheese - Spank Thru - About A Girl - Breed - Been A Son - Stain - Negative Creep - Blew
Recordings : There are 3 known sources for that show : * Two audience sources (a private video & an analog recording) * A soundboard source
The private video (equipment unknown)
Everybody know it is not circulating. The Master tape is owned by the Club : the Fahrenheit.
The first Live Nirvana Collectors Union (LNCU) President, Benoît Martigny contacted the guy who has the tape and was lucky enough to watch the show.
According to Mike Ziegler & Kris Sproul's "Nirvana Live Guide", the video includes Krist jamming on the Blues Brothers' "Peter Gunn Theme" during soundcheck and it has some small cuts.
In November 2004, a projection of the video occured for the venue 20 birthday.

The analog audience source. Lowest Gen : Ana(M) Equipment : unknown
This audience recording is very good because it was done for a radio station ( Aligre FM ).
It was taped by Denis Prévot, DJ of the radio show "Planet Claire", in which the concert was broadcasted.
Benoît managed to get a cdr(1) from a guy of the radio. It's a friend of this guy who transferred the master, so this source comes from a pre-FM radio master tape.
Unfortunately it is not complete. There are a lot of cuts and moreover the guy "forgot" to include "Love Buzz" on the cdr....
So there are two "versions" of the Ana(M) circulating :
> Copies of the cdr(1) Benoît got (pretty rare I guess) (37'58).
> Copies of the cdr(1) with "Love Buzz" (mp3) added by Benoît at the wrong place from the webcast Ana(M)>RA>MP3 (40'56).
It features stage talks not present on the sbd source but "Been A Son" and "Dive" cut in and it's missing :
* The "Johnny B. Goode" jam
* "About A Girl"
* Some stage talks present on the sbd source
01/ Intro/screaming >Kurt : "We're Nirvana"
02/ School >Kurt : "Thanks a lot"
03/ Scoff >cut (missing "Louder ?" by Kris)
04/ Kurt : "We want some french toasts right now...we haven't had a decent breakfast ????" >Floyd The Barber >Kurt : "Thank you" [wrong place]

07/ cut (missing "More guitar ? ... What ?...You want us to do "Johnny B. Goode" ? [laugh]" by Kurt) >Polly
08/ Big Cheese >cut (missing all before "Hello French people... ?? France ??" by Krist)
09/ Spank Thru >cut (missing "??" by Chad)
10/ cut (missing About A Girl >Kurt : "Donkey show") >Breed >Kurt : "Thanks" >cut >a few seconds of guitar
11/ cut >Been A Son (cuts in)
12/ cut >Kurt : "This is an other song off of our EP" >Stain
13/ (cut ?) >Negative Creep

The analog soundboard source. Lowest Gen : Ana(M) (38'09) Equipment : unknown
This recording is pretty good too but I think the audience recording is superior.
Bloody & Heavy members asked the soundman to record the show. Benoît got a cdr(1) from a french journalist, Christian Eudeline.
It features "About A Girl" (cuts in), the "Johnny B. Goode" jam and stage talks not present on the audience source but "School", "Floyd The Barber" & "Negative Creep" cut in and it's missing :
* The intro
* "Breed" (we only have the opening few seconds of the song )
* "Been A Son"
* "Stain"
* Some stage talks present on the audience source
01/ School (cuts in) >Kurt : "Thanks a lot"
02/ Scoff >Kris : "Louder ?"
03/ Love Buzz
04/ cut (missing "We want some french toasts right now...we haven't had a decent breakfast ????" by Kurt) >Floyd The Barber (cuts in) >Kurt : "Thank you"
05/ (cut ?) >Dive >jam (Kurt : "More guitar ? ... What ?...You want us to do "Johnny B. Goode" ? [laugh]")
06/ Polly
07/ Big Cheese >Kurt: "Thank you" - Krist : "Hello French people... ?? France ??"
08/ Spank Thru >Chad : "??"
09/ cut >About A Girl (cuts in) >Kurt : "Donkey show"
10/ Beginning of Breed >huge cut (missing Breed, Been A Son & Stain) >Negative Creep (cuts in) >Kurt : "Thank you for coming this evening" - Chad : "?? boys and girls" - Kurt:: 'Good night and god bless"
11/ Blew >cut (missing "Well, thank you and good night" by Kurt and "?? boys and girls" + the weird cry by Chad)

With a mix of both sources, we have near the whole show. The most complete recording I made is 47'29 (based on the sbd) :
01/ Intro >Kurt : "We're Nirvana" (aud)
02/ School >Kurt : "Thanks a lot" (aud for the beginning of "School" then sbd)
03/ Scoff >Kris : "Louder ?" (sbd)
04/ Love Buzz (sbd)
05/ Kurt : "We want some french toasts right now...we haven't had a decent breakfast ????" >Floyd The Barber > Kurt : "Thank you" (aud for the talks and the beginning of "Floyd The Barber" then sbd)
06/ (cut ?) >Dive >jam (Kurt : "More guitar ? ... What ?...You want us to do "Johnny B. Goode" ? [laugh]") (sbd)
07/ Polly (sbd)
08/ Big Cheese >Kurt: "Thank you" - Krist : "Hello French people... ?? France ??" (sbd)
09/ Spank Thru >Chad : "??" (sbd)
10/ cut >About A Girl (cuts in) >Kurt : "Donkey show" (sbd)
11/ Breed >Kurt : "Thanks" >cut >a few seconds of guitar (aud)
12/ cut >Been A Son (cuts in) (aud)
13/ cut >Kurt : "This is an other song off of our EP" >Stain (aud)
14/ (cut ?) >Negative Creep (aud) >Kurt : "Thank you for coming this evening" - Chad : "?? boys and girls" - Kurt:: 'Good night and god bless" (sbd)
15/ Blew (sbd) >Kurt : "Well, thank you and good night" - Chad : "?? boys and girls" + the weird cry (aud)

Thanks a lot to Benoît Martigny for the info and above all to have tracked down the recordings.
Thanks to Christian Eudeline for his info, Frederic Labat, Michael Sanderson and Pierre Leroy (for his mix).
And of course, I think I can speak for all the Nirvana fans, thanks a lot to Denis Prévot and Bloody & Heavy members to have recorded the show.

If someone can help to add information, don't hesitate to contact me ! ryfer@wanadoo.fr
By the way I'm looking for :
* a complete copy of the radio broadcast
* a copy of the webcast
* someone who can make a very good mix to get the most possible complete recording based on the audience source, or even the sbd source (mine is very poor and based on the sbd)
* photos, flyer, ticket,...
* the review of the show Benoît wrote after he watched the video; english or french version (maybe someone has kept it...)
* ANYthing about that show

So here is MY infos....(not a lot in fact but....):
We know, our little french fan group, that the video of the 12/01/89
Issy-les-moulineaux, FR Farenheit exists.....
So, I went to the place yesterday at the really good time, all the
staff of the place were here...It a very tiny room and the show
frequency is low, so it's a bit hard to catch the guys, they are
really anonymous..
Whatever, a girl told me (she was at the show):"
we can't give you anything....Blahbla.... Nirvana's
rights.....Courtney...Geffen....and whatever, I think it would be a
real challenge to find the video among all our videos mess..in that
club..."
I just asked her if she was sure the video was here and that she won't
give the master to a hoarder fan....or to anyone... She said "no, the
video will stay here"
THEN, I found the "guy" : He's the owner of the master video tape, I
spoke with him for half an hour about fugazi and other stuff...but you
don't care about that...So, he told me that all the guys who were in
front of me were at the shows, they all remembered TAD !
He told me that TAD and Nirvana were so angry !! They chose to play in
france just for the food and when they saw the bad meal that the
farenheit staff had done...they're not great coocks...
I saw those meals in question...not very famous...I must say...
And then, the guy told me that he has the video at home, that he sent
a copy to geffen. But it starts to circulate among geffen and geffen's
friend...A guy comes to the farhenheit and told them "hey, I got that
video at home...So the taper was a kind of upset because he's never
done any copy to anyone else than Geffen.
He told me that "the sound is not very good, the bad thing is that the
camera had a system to put title and that the title is "Nirviana"
The video is great he said , but he thinks that he would be better to
put it under earth, because he can't trade it or anything, he can't do
anything with it....that's a shit for both of us.
Well, here is the thing, He asked him if there was a way to see it, he
agrees and I (and why not, who else wants to see it) will see it on
mars, around the 25th (the day of the next's concert), he will bring
the video (he thought about it, and I wish he will !!) and he will
pass it in the bar, where there is a TV screen...
I hope that I will tell you more next time,
